Let’s be honest—no one likes going out in the pouring rain, and that includes many of our dogs! While the odd missed walk isn’t the end of the world, it’s important to make sure your dog still gets some mental stimulation to keep them happy and balanced. The good news? Bad weather is the perfect excuse to stay cosy indoors and have some fun with your dog. Here are my top five indoor games to keep your dog entertained and engaged when heading outside just isn’t an option.
1. Treasure Hunt
Dogs love using their noses, so why not set up a treasure hunt?
- How to Play: Hide some treats or a favourite toy around the house. Start with easy hiding places and gradually make it harder as your dog gets the hang of it. Use a cue like “Find it!” to start them searching.
- Why It’s Great: This game taps into your dog’s natural sniffing instincts and keeps them busy, focused, and moving around.
Pro Tip: If you’ve got a snuffle mat, use it to make the game even more engaging. Dogs love foraging!
2. Help Around the House
Bad weather is the perfect time to teach your dog to lend a paw!
- How to Play: Start simple by asking them to pick up their toys and put them in a basket. Gradually build on this by teaching them to carry items or even shut doors. Use plenty of praise and treats to keep it fun.
- Why It’s Great: It’s great mental exercise for your dog, strengthens your bond, and gives them a sense of purpose.
Pro Tip: Use clear commands like “Tidy up” or “Bring it” for specific tasks to make learning easier and enjoyable.
3. Bone or Frozen Kong Time
Sometimes, a good chew is all a dog needs to relax.
- How to Play: Stuff a Kong with something tasty like peanut butter, plain yoghurt, or wet dog food, then pop it in the freezer for an extra challenge. Alternatively, offer a safe chew toy or vet-approved bone.
- Why It’s Great: Chewing is a natural stress reliever for dogs and keeps them mentally stimulated while they work to get the tasty rewards.
Pro Tip: Change up the fillings in your Kong to keep it exciting. Try mashed banana, a little grated cheese, or some of their kibble mixed with a splash of water.
4. Toy Switch Games
This one’s brilliant for teaching your dog focus and impulse control.
- How to Play: Grab two of their favourite toys. Encourage them to take one, then ask them to “Drop it” and reward them with the second toy. Keep swapping back and forth, gradually making them wait a little longer before you switch.
- Why It’s Great: It’s a simple way to practise important skills like “Drop it” while keeping your dog engaged and entertained.
Pro Tip: If your dog struggles to give up the toy, don’t stress—use a tasty treat as a trade. It’ll help them get the idea quickly.
5. Teach a New Trick
Bad weather days are ideal for brushing up on training or teaching something new.
- How to Play: Pick a fun trick like “Spin,” “Bow,” or even “Wave.” Keep training sessions short (5-10 minutes) and use plenty of rewards to keep it positive.
- Why It’s Great: Training strengthens your bond, builds confidence, and keeps your dog’s brain busy.
Pro Tip: A clicker can be super helpful for marking the exact moment your dog does the behaviour you want.
Bonus Tip: Create a Calming Space
If the weather is unsettling for your dog, make them a cosy spot with their bed, a favourite chew, and some soothing music. Sometimes, a bit of downtime is the best activity of all.
Just because you’re stuck indoors doesn’t mean your dog has to miss out. These games are easy to set up and give you the perfect chance to connect and have fun together. Which one will you try first? Let me know—I’d love to hear how you get on!
